Camila Mendes is a staunch advocate of body positivity, and she hopes to inspire others to do the same. That’s why she feels it was ‘necessary’ to share her past struggles with an eating disorder.
Last year, Cami opened up about her battle with bulimia. And, the Riverdale actress is sharing her reasons behind the choice to go public in a recent interview.
“It just felt so necessary for me to speak about those things,” she explained to Shape magazine. “I realized that I have this platform, and young women and men who look up to me, and there is a tremendous power to do something positive with it.”
She also opened up about her journey to self-love and her methods on staying healthy – like finding time for herself and seeing a nutritionist and a therapist.
Cami has since stopped dieting and focuses on eating healthy instead. “I was always on some kind of weird diet but I haven’t been on one since. I’m very proud of myself,” she shares.
It’s been a process for Cami, but she’s learned a lot about self-love and is embracing her natural body shape. “This body-positivity movement we’re having right now is so amazing and it’s helping me so much. I’m seeing all these people I look up to, like Rihanna, open up about their weight fluctuations and loving themselves the way they are. That makes me love myself more too.”
She admits it’s not always smooth sailing, and there are still times when she does feel a bit insecure about herself. But she moves past those moments by telling herself: “You’re fine. You look good. This is your prime, so enjoy it.”
