Meet Union J! This new British boy band got their start on the UK’s X Factor—just like our guys 1 Direction! Let’s get to know these cuties!
There’s Jamie Hamblett, but everyone calls him “JJ.” He’s 24 and is the oldest in the group. Before pursuing his music career he was a jockey (rode horses), an actor, and a model.
Jaymi Hensley, 22, is known to be the “mom” of the group. He makes sure the guys wake up on time. Jaymi’s celebrity crush is Beyonce, and he likes Twilight.
Then there is 20-year-old Josh Cuthbert, who is said to be the loud and romantic one of the bunch. When he was 14, he starred in the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
And last but not least there’s 19-year-old George Shelley. With the help of his grandpa, George taught himself how to play the guitar when he was 13.
George originally tried out for the X Factor as a solo artist. At first, JJ, Josh, and Jaymi were called Triple J, but they did not make it through the bootcamp round of the TV show. But when another group dropped out of the X Factor, the boys teamed up with George, changed their band name to Union J, and were given a second chance. They made it all the way to the live shows and finished in fourth place!
But they didn’t have to be sad about their elimination for too long…they just signed a record deal with Sony! The guys confirmed the good news on the British morning show Daybreak. Their former X Factor’s contestant, 16 year-old Ella Henderson who finished in sixth place, was also recently scooped up by Sony! Both groups are hoping to have their debut albums out in 2013.
