Brace yourself. Things are about to get very, very batty.
An iconic superhero is about to take flight: The CW has found its Batwoman!
Model-actress Ruby Rose has been chosen to take on the role of Katy Kane aka Batwoman. Ruby, who identifies as gender-fluid, joins CW’s Arrowverse as the lesbian superhero, and will make her much-anticipated entrance in this year’s annual DC crossover event, airing in December.
Uber-producer Greg Berlanti, the talented brain behind the rich DCTV landscape, is also currently developing a Batwoman stand-alone series. Executive producer Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries) will be writing the script for the much buzzed about project, which will tell the story of Katy Kane donning the cape as Gotham’s Batwoman. The official logline reads:
“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet.
In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
If the series is greenlit, it will air in 2019 as part CW’s compelling Arrowverse, alongside The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, and flagship show Arrow.
The CW first announced their plans for Batwoman last month, revealing that not only will the character be a lesbian in the Arrowverse, they will also be casting an out actress to play the role.
Ruby Rose is known for her stellar portrayal of Stella Carlin on Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, along with standout performances in films like Pitch Perfect 3, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, and John Wick: Chapter 2. She can next be seen in the upcoming movie The Meg.
