We bid farewell to the man behind the mask.
Stan Lee, Marvel Comics’ real-life superhero, has passed away. He was 95.
The legendary writer, editor, former president and at times both the publisher and vice president of Marvel Comics whose timeless creations have made him a universal icon died on Monday (November 12). A statement released by their family attorney Kirk E. Schenck stated:
“Paramedics responded to Stan Lee’s house in the Hollywood Hills early Monday morning for a medical emergency. He was transported to Cedar-Sinai Medical Center where he passed away shortly after.
JC Lee and all of Stan Lee’s friends and colleagues want to thank all of his fans and well wishers for their kind words and condolences. Stan was an icon in his field. His fans loved him and his desire to interact with them. He loved his fans and treated them with the same respect and love they gave him.
He worked tirelessly his whole life creating great characters for the world to enjoy. He wanted to inspire our imagination and for us to all use it to make the world a better place. His legacy will live on forever.
Stan Lee was behind some of Marvel Comics’ most enduring, beloved characters, creating or co-creating Black Panther, Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Mighty Thor, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Ant-Man, among countless others. His life’s masterpieces have defined generations upon generations of loyal fans.
He told Chicago Tribune in April 2014:
“I used to think what I did was not very important. People are building bridges and engaging in medical research, and here I was doing stories about fictional people who do extraordinary, crazy things and wear costumes.
But I suppose I have come to realize that entertainment is not easily dismissed.”
Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger said in a statement:
“Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created. A superhero in his own right to Marvel fans around the world, Stan had the power to inspire, to entertain and to connect. The scale of his imagination was only exceeded by the size of his heart.”
The Walt Disney Co. bought Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion in 2009.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also paid tribute:
“No one has had more of an impact on my career and everything we do at Marvel Studios than Stan Lee. Stan leaves an extraordinary legacy that will outlive us all. Our thoughts are with his daughter, his family and the millions of fans who have been forever touched by Stan’s genius, charisma and heart.”

At age 7, I drew this weird portrait of Stan Lee and asked my Mom to send it to him. Thankfully she didn't because 30+ years later, I got to give it to the great one in person. Thanks for all the fun Stan #Excelsior pic.twitter.com/IpfYBSjWyf

“What a legend and so grateful to have met you. Thank you Stan Lee for the adventures, characters and memories you’ve given the world. Your legacy will live forever.
Stan Lee was also known for making cameos in the films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And it’s been revealed that he was able to film his cameo for the highly-anticipated Avengers 4. According to a statement made by Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo:
“So, Stan, typically we try to get him out — he doesn’t love to fly — so we try to get him out for his cameos around the same time. So if we have other movies shooting on the same lot that we’re on, for instance Ant-Man 2 or Avengers 4, we group his cameos together and then move him from one set to the next and kind of get him through his cameos in one day.”
Rest in peace, Stan Lee. You will be missed.
