The 2025 Oscars had its big night on Sunday, and Anora came out on top, taking home the coveted Best Picture award. The film dominated the evening, racking up a total of five wins, including Best Actress for Mikey Madison. Director Sean Baker made history, scoring four Oscars himself—Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing, in addition to Best Picture.
In the acting categories, Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist, while Kieran Culkin secured Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain. Meanwhile, Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Emilia Pérez, making a heartfelt statement in her acceptance speech: “I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award.”
The night also saw some groundbreaking wins. Flow won Best Animated Feature, marking Latvia’s first-ever Oscar win. Brazil also made history, with I’m Still Here taking home Best International Feature Film. No Other Land was named Best Documentary Feature.
Peter Straughan won Best Adapted Screenplay for Conclave, adding another accolade to the film’s achievements. In the world of design, Paul Tazewell made history as the first Black man to win Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked, which also took home Best Production Design. Other films with multiple wins included The Brutalist, which earned Best Cinematography and Best Original Score, and Dune: Part Two, which picked up Best Sound and Best Visual Effects. Emilia Pérez also scored Best Original Song for “El Mal.” Best Makeup and Hairstyling went to The Substance.
The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, aired live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. However, the broadcast wasn’t without its hiccups—ABC and Hulu faced a glitch right as the show started, cutting off before the final moments. Despite that, the night was filled with memorable performances and tributes.
The ceremony opened with a dazzling performance by Wicked stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The music continued with a special tribute to James Bond film soundtracks featuring Doja Cat, Lisa of Blackpink, and Raye. Later in the night, Queen Latifah, Whoopi Goldberg, and Oprah Winfrey led a moving tribute to the late Quincy Jones, while Morgan Freeman honored his “dear friend” Gene Hackman, who passed away last month, during the In Memoriamsegment. A special appearance by the Los Angeles Master Chorale added a poignant touch to the evening.
This year’s Oscars also took a moment to acknowledge the recent Los Angeles wildfires, paying tribute to the heroes and victims of the disaster. With 23 categories announced and some truly historic wins, the 2025 Academy Awards will be remembered for its groundbreaking wins and heartfelt moments.
