Adam Levine was caught between a rock and a hard place during The Voice eliminations episode on Tuesday (December 4) night.

The Maroon 5 front man has been a judge on The Voice since the show began seven years ago. And, as a judge, he’s had to make a lot of tough decisions on the show. Now, an unusual occurrence during the show’s “Top 10 Instant Save” episode is causing some fans to speak out about his decision on the show.

On Monday (December 3), The Voice’s top 10 finalists had the chance to wow the audience with their performances on stage, with the next day’s episode slated to announce the viewer-voted results on which singers would go to next week’s semi-finals.

When the time came, host Carson Daly announced the bottom three – DeAndre Nico, 22, and Reagan Strange, 14 (both Team Adam) and Dave Fenley, 39 (Team Blake).

Usually, this is when the bottom three battle it out (performance-wise, of course) in an Instant Save round – where fans on Twitter voted for who they wanted to “instant save” by using a special hashtag.

However, at the time, Carson shared with the audience that Reagan was too sick to perform for the Instant Save round.

“She’s in the building, not feeling well at the moment, isn’t joining us,” Carson explained. “But is still here in spirit and part of the show, as for now. So we’re thinking of her.”

And Carson also clarified the rules for the Instant Save: “Dave, DeAndre and Reagan remain at risk for elimination. And you can only save one of them. Unfortunately, Reagan’s still feeling under the weather, she’s not going to be able to perform tonight. [BUt] you’ll still be able to tweet to save Reagan … so she won’t perform, but she’s not out of it by a long shot.”

Both DeAndre and Dave took part in the sing-off. And when the time came for the judges to speak, here’s what Adam had to say:

“This sucks, man. DeAndre, you’re an exquisite singer. I’m a little confused as to why you’re in the bottom — that perplexes me,” Levine said. “But I want to say this… there is an unbelievably talented little girl right now who is not able to fight for her position on this show. And you were fortunate enough tonight to be able to sing. And man, you sang like a champ.”

“I can’t sing for Reagan. Reagan has to sing for Reagan, and she’s not here,” he continued. “As much as I urge you all to vote for this man, because he should never have been in the bottom — I don’t know if I have the heart to not tell everyone right now.”

After a pause, he added, “I have a very special relationship with Reagan. And I have two little girls at home. The thought of breaking her heart by not urging everyone to give this girl a shot to go and redeem herself next week would be too far beneath me.”

“I want you to know I love you,” he continued, speaking directly to Nico. “I appreciate what you’ve done here tonight, and honestly, I think you should both be there. But I gotta fight for my girl. And I gotta make sure that I represent her properly in this moment, because she didn’t have a chance to use her voice tonight. So I’m going to use it for her as well as I possibly can to make sure she can make it next week. That’s all I can say. It’s weird.”

At the end of the show, the results showed that America had voted for Reagan to be instantly saved, eliminating both DeAndre and Dave from the semi-finals.

Fans have taken to Twitter to share their reactions, with some calling for a re-do.

And some called out Adam for his decision.

But fellow judge Kelly Clarkson’s words might be able to shed some light on Adam’s decision. After a commercial break on the show, she shared her two cents, saying:

“You know what, guys? I have been these contestants before, I know Jennifer has as well, and I know Adam in his heart and I know he loves his team. He feels really bad for Reagan,” she began.

“But I just wanna say, DeAndre, you just sang the hell out of that song,” she continued, commending the contestant.

“I know it’s so horrible that Reagan is not able to present herself and I know that’s where it’s coming from, so please know that’s where it’s coming from. He’s bummed for her,” she added, concluding, “But I just wanna say everyone did a fantastic job tonight. A really great job.”
