Amanda Bynes has filed to end her conservatorship of close to a decade.
The 35-year-old actress has taken the first step to get out from user the conservatorship that has been in place for almost nine years.
News outlets have reported that Amanda filed a petition to terminate the conservatorship of her person and estate in California’s Ventura County Superior Court. She also reportedly filed a capacity declaration. The capacity declaration is a requirement in the state of California for all conservatorship cases, which means there should be updated records about Amanda’s mental state from either a psychologist, physician, or religious healing practitioner.
A hearing for Amanda’s petition has been scheduled for March 22.
Amanda’s attorney, David A. Esquibias, has confirmed the news to ET. He told People:
“Amanda wishes to terminate her conservatorship. She believes her condition is improved and protection of the court is no longer necessary.”
The What I Like About You star has been in a conservatorship with her mother Lynn Bynes since August of 2013. Lynn gained legal control of Amanda when she was 27 years old, which meant she had full control of her daughter’s personal and medical decisions as well as financial affairs.
Amanda was placed under conservatorship after plenty of run-ins with the authorities as well as an involuntary psychiatric hold. She previously admitted that she had been “on drugs” during her erratic, headline-making behavior during that time. In 2014, she also tweeted that she had been given a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
She celebrated her 35th birthday in April 2021, and David told ET then that Amanda was doing well and living a quiet life.
She last gave fans an update on her life back in May 2020, taking to Instagram to share that she had been in a two-month treatment program. She also shared that she was getting her bachelor’s degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and was working on her clothing line — and that she was engaged to Paul Michael.
