Ana De Armas was not expecting Blonde to get an NC-17 rating.
The MPA’s official rating of the upcoming film was announced in March. A few months later, director Andrew Dominik stated that the decision completely surprised him.
Now that the movie is nearing its world premiere to be held at the Venice Film Festival, Ana is opening up about the project and echoing Andrew’s thoughts on the rating. She said that she felt other films were “way more explicit.”
Speaking to L-Officiel, the 34-year-old Blonde star said of the rating:
“I didn’t understand why that happened.
I can tell you a number of shows of movies that are way more explicit with a lot more sexual content than Blonde.”
Ana went on to defend the importance of showing all that they chose to depict on screen in the project in order to tell Marilyn Monroe’s story:
“To tell this story it is important to show all these moments in Marilyn’s life that made her end up the way that she did.
It needed to be explained. Everyone [in the cast] knew we had to go to uncomfortable places. I wasn’t the only one.”
Blonde is based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates. Ana stars as Marilyn Monroe. The film charts Marilyn’s rise to stardom and explores her romantic entanglements.
