The Academy has launched an inquiry and review of the Oscar nomination procedure following Andrea Riseborough’s Best Actress nom, which came as a surprise to many of the Academy voters and fans as well.

In case you missed it, Andrea had decided to launch her own campaign for consideration at the Best Actress Oscar race. She had no studio backing her. Many of her peers publicly expressed their support, including former Academy Award nominee Edward Norton, and winners Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow.

In the last days before voting closed, a campaign on social media was led by big names in the industry such as Frances Fisher, Demi Moore, and more, which rocketed her name into the conversation.

Since her nomination was announced, many were wondering how she secured the nom over other actresses who were in the running, including Danielle Deadwyler.

The Academy has now issued a statement regarding the whole ordeal. They revealed that they would be conducting a “review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated.” Read the full statement right here:

“It is the Academy’s goal to ensure that the Awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner, and we are committed to ensuring an inclusive awards process. We are conducting a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated, and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication.

We have confidence in the integrity of our nomination and voting procedures, and support genuine grassroots campaigns for outstanding performances.”

After her nomination was announced, Andrea said in a statement:

“I’m astounded. … It was so hard to believe it might ever happen because we really hadn’t been in the running for anything else. Even though we had a lot of support, the idea it might actually happen seemed so far away.”
