Armie Hammer recently revealed a unique and unexpected birthday gift he received this year—a vasectomy, courtesy of his mom, Dru Hammer. The actor, who’s 38, opened up about this rather unconventional gift on his “Armie HammerTime” podcast, where he invited his mom on as a guest. Dru even touched on some of the more challenging public accusations against him, including cannibalism and sexual assault allegations.
Dru explained the backstory behind the gift in the interview, saying that it came up when she was deciding what to get him for his birthday. “I call Armie and I go, ‘What would you like for your birthday this year?’” Dru shared. “He was like, ‘I don’t know. Maybe money. Whatever.’ And I was like, ‘I believe I’m going to give you a vasectomy.’” Her unexpected choice was apparently influenced by concerns that Armie might accidentally end up with more children.
Armie himself recounted the experience of going to the doctor for the procedure. “I go to a doctor’s office and I go, ‘I’m here to schedule a vasectomy,’” he recalled. “He was like, ‘Are you sure you wanna do this?’ I’m like, ‘I have two beautiful kids. I don’t want any more kids. I’m good to go.’” Despite the clinic staff trying to dissuade him, Armie was firm in his decision. “They try to talk you out of it. I’m like, ‘You’re not going to talk me out of it. I’m done. I’m good.’”
He then shared a humorous exchange at the receptionist’s desk regarding payment. “The receptionist was like, ‘Are you gonna be putting this on insurance?’” Armie said. “I go, ‘Actually, I don’t have insurance.’ She goes, ‘What?’ I go, ‘Yeah, I haven’t had insurance for years.’ She was like, ‘Oh, OK. Are you going to be putting it on a credit card?’ And I go, ‘My credit cards won’t cover this. My mother’s going to be calling you and she’s going to be paying for it.’”
The receptionist’s reaction was priceless. “She was looking down and she [looks up] and goes, ‘What?’ And I go, ‘Yes, my mother gave me this as a birthday present.’”
Dru then elaborated on her reasoning for this unique gift. While she’s Catholic and ideally would prefer her son to avoid sex outside of marriage, she’s realistic about modern life and, as she put it, the young women who might want “to have Armie Hammer’s baby.” Armie added humorously, “Maybe when I had money they would!”
The conversation then took a more serious turn when Dru addressed some of the difficult allegations Armie has faced in recent years, specifically accusations of sexual assault and cannibalism. Dru defended her son’s character, saying, “I love that you lived up to your wrongdoings when you were on Piers Morgan.” She was quick to emphasize her belief that Armie was “not criminally wrong,” adding, “If there was a smidgen of things that were wrong that you did, as far as a rape accusation, they would have nailed you.”
On the much-publicized cannibalism claims, Dru shared a memorable phone call she had with Armie. “I even called you one time. I was like, ‘Let me just get this straight,’” she explained. “I go, ‘Are there any women out there with limbs or ribs missing?’ That’s what I want to know as a mother. Because end of conversation if there are limbs or ribs missing.”
She then reminded Armie to be cautious in his online communications, noting, “I think you learned not to put stupid things in DMs. No one was eaten…but you were stupid.”
