With the release of the second season of Selena: The Series, fans can’t stop talking about one particular scene depicting a little-known event that occurred – two queens meeting by chance.
FYI, Selena: The Series is about the short life and brilliant career of the late Selena Quintanilla Perez, with Christian Serratos portraying the iconic Tejano singer. Season 2, in particular, covers “the rise of Selena the superstar,” per series creator Moisés Zamora.
In episode six, there’s a scene of a young girl at the mall – she’s with her mom and her sister. And she happens to see Selena shopping with her mother and sister. Their paths cross, and Selena says hi; the young girl had to work up the courage to respond with a shy hello.
Turns out, the young girl is none other than a young Beyoncé Knowles – with her mom Tina and sister Solange. And young Bey was legit starstruck at running into the “Dreaming Of You” singer.
Sounds like some pretty creative fan fiction, right? But, apparently, it’s all true. They did meet!
Years before Queen Bey became the icon we know and love, she did run into the Queen of Tejano music at a mall in Houston – although it may not exactly be the way it happened onscreen. But Bey has previously talked about the encounter it in an interview.
“I did actually meet Selena in The Galleria mall in Houston, but I didn’t say much to Selena because I wasn’t a celebrity and I just saw her and said, ‘Hello’ and kept it moving,” she said in an old interview with MTV Tr3s. “Definitely growing up in Texas, I heard her on the radio and I think listening to her album, even though I didn’t know exactly what she was singing, it helped me in the studio with my pronunciation. … I think she is a legend and I admire her. And she was so talented, so I’m very happy that even though she didn’t know who I was, I’m still so excited that I got that opportunity.”
Christian recently spoke about that scene in in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I thought it was so cool, I thought it was so cute,” she told the outlet. “And I thought, ‘You know, that’s what this story is about, is inspiration, and inspiring young people to follow their dreams, whatever those dreams are.'”
“I always make jokes … is this going to be my connection to meeting Beyoncé?” she added.
