BTS has dropped their first-ever song in English – their latest single “Dynamite.” And the K-Pop group also set new world records while they were at it.
According to YouTube, the “Dynamite” music video got 101.1 million views in 24 hours – setting the record for most views for a music video in its first 24 hours on the platform. They also set an all-time record of biggest music video premiere – over three million viewers watched concurrently watched the video upon its release.
They also made history as the first Korean act to top the Spotify’s “Global Top 50” chart – the song also quickly topped the iTunes charts in 104 regions.
The group – composed of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook – previously talked about creating the song amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“It was a huge, enormous showing for all of us,” RM shared with Entertainment Tonight. “We decided to do it… [to] try something new… in this current situation, the pandemic.”
“There were many surprises [and] changes we felt like… we needed a break from that, so we focused on what we can do the best and that was music and performance,” he continued. “We tried to get energy and we wanted to give the energy back to the world.”
“Things are simple,” he added. “The world needs some positive explosion and we came with ‘Dynamite’ and boom.”
BTS is set to perform the song live for the first time at the 2020 MTV VMAs, where they’re also nominated for three awards.
“The guys look forward to what they always look forward to — our singing, our songs, our performance… and a lot of new visuals,” V teased. “It’s gonna be sort of a retro feel, so fans can look forward to that.”
It’s still unclear whether the group will be flying in to perform or will be livestreaming their performance in South Korea. This year’s Video Music Awards will be held at several outdoor locations – it was originally slated to be held at the Barclays Center, but they’ve since altered their plans due to the coronavirus pandemic.
MTV and Barclays Center spokespeople previously released a statement:
“The 2020 VMAs will be held on Sunday, August 30th and pay homage to the incredible resiliency of New York with several outdoor performances around the City with limited or no audience, adhering to all state and city guidelines. In close consultation with state and local health officials, it became clear at this time that outdoor performances with limited or no audience would be more feasible and safer than an indoor event.
The VMAs will highlight the boroughs in an exciting show and return to Barclays Center in 2021. MTV will continue to work closely with the Department of Health, state and local officials, the medical community, and key stakeholders to ensure the safety of all involved.”
Keke Palmer will be hosting the evening’s ceremonies. Other performers include Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, J Balvin, The Weeknd, Roddy Ricch, Maluma and CNCO.
