POPSTAR!: Congrats on your new single. It’s a banger. Can you share the story of how the “I Still Remember” R3HAB remix come about? How long have you guys worked on this song?
CAROLINE: Thank you! I actually wrote “I Still Remember” with some friends of mine in Nashville in late 2018. I fell in love with the song the minute we wrote it, and I knew I wanted to do something special with it. I felt that the track would work perfectly with a remix/DJ type of collab. R3HAB is one of my favorite artists, especially in the remix world. When I found out that the liked the song and was down to remix it, I was ecstatic. It was literally a dream come true. He elevated the track to a completely new level, and I adore it. He is so awesome to work with, and I knew he would knock it out of the park. It only took about a month or two for the remix to be complete once he got the song. So, overall, we’ve been in the process of trying to release “I Still Remember” since 2018, but it only took a few weeks for the remix to come about!
POPSTAR!: What’s the most memorable part of creating this track? Can you share something you’ve learned while working on this song?
CAROLINE: I’d say the most memorable part of creating the track was writing it with friends of mine. It was honestly my favorite writing session of all time, and I remember how awesome the energy in the room was when we were recording and tracking the song. We went out for burgers after the final day of recording, and it’s something I think I’ll remember forever. The song holds a really special place in my heart because of this. Something I learned while working on “I Still Remember” is to not be afraid to explore new sounds as an artist. “I Still Remember” was the first song I wrote that really fit into more of the techno side of pop. I never knew my style as an artist would fit into the techno genre, but it did, and I’m so happy about it! It’s really opened me up to be more exploitative as a writer.
POPSTAR!: What was your inspiration for “I Still Remember”? Do you have a favorite lyric and why?
CAROLINE: The inspiration behind “I Still Remember” came from my friends and I being young and figuring out relationships. I think the ages of 16, 17, 18, etc., come with a lot of falling in love with people who aren’t necessarily right for you in the long run. It’s so easy to get attached to feelings and memories from the beginning of a relationship that prohibit you from ending things once they go south. My favorite line of the song is “You get to me.” It’s simple, but I think it says a lot. When someone has the power to get to you, inside your head and your heart and your day-to-day actions, you know that person is really impacting your life. That’s when things get dangerous and wonderful and scary and breathtaking all at the same time.
POPSTAR!: What’s life in quarantine been like for you? How have you been staying creative at home?
CAROLINE: I’m very blessed to be quarantined with my family. I’ve actually enjoyed a few aspects of quarantine, as it’s allowed me to write music at a slower pace. Right now it’s just me in my bedroom with my guitar. I’m taking days to mull over lyrics and chords when normally I try to write a song in an hour or so. I’m enjoying being creative just to be creative. I’ve also been trying to draw inspiration from books that I’m finally getting around to reading and movies I’m finally seeing. I’ve just been observing the world during this difficult time, and it’s offered me a new way of looking at life and at people, which I’ve applied to some of the songs I’ve written recently.
POPSTAR!: What other projects can we look forward to from you in the coming months?
CAROLINE: There are lots of new things coming in the near future! With this particular release, I have a music video coming out shortly, which I am so excited about! It’s probably my favorite to date, as I think the concept is totally unexpected and weird, which I love. I also have so many new songs I can’t wait to release later this year. Even if I don’t get to play any live shows in 2020, I’m excited to share all of this new music with the fans and people who support me!
So exciting!
