Black Panther star, Chadwick Boseman, has died. He was 43.

His passing was announced in a statement posted on Twitter, which reads:
“It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman.

Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV.

A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy.

It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.

He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side.

The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Chadwick, who first rose to fame with his portrayals of Black American icons such as Jackie Robinson in 42 and James Brown in Get on Up, is best known for bringing Marvel superhero T’Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther, to life in the 2018 blockbuster hit Black Panther, where he made history as the first-ever Black actor to headline a Marvel Studios movie.

He never publicly spoke of his health struggles. According to the statement, he worked through his treatments for most of his career. Fans can catch him one final time onscreen in the upcoming feature adaptation of August Wilson’s play, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, where he stars opposite Viola Davis.

His passing comes as a shock to many, and Hollywood is deeply mourning his loss.

Rest in peace, Chadwick. You will be missed.
