Chappell Roan is opening up about how public backlash has affected her—personally, not just professionally.

The 27-year-old singer has become known not only for her bold performances and art but also for her outspoken opinions. You might remember when she confronted a photographer on the red carpet in October 2024—a moment that quickly went viral. Since then, Roan has faced plenty of commentary online, and now she’s revealing just how deeply some of it has cut.

Speaking to SZA in a recent conversation for Interview Magazine, Roan shared, “People started hating me for me and not for my art. When it’s not about my art anymore, it’s like, ‘They hate me because I’m Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make.’ That’s when it changed.”

While Roan has thick skin when it comes to critiques of her music, it’s a different story when the criticism feels personal.

“When things are taken out of context, people assume so much about you,” she said. “I didn’t realize I’d care so much. When it comes to my art, I’m like, ‘B–ch, you can think whatever you want. You are allowed to hate it with all your guts.’”

But when that judgment targets her personality, she admits it hits hard. “But when it comes to me and my personality, it’s like, ‘D-mn. Am I the most insufferable b-ch of our generation?’ It makes me cry. I don’t know if it will ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful about me.”

Roan has been experiencing a major breakthrough in her career lately, but this emotional transparency shows the flipside of fame—especially in a hyper-connected world where social media often blurs the line between artist and individual.

Despite the criticism, Chappell continues to push forward, releasing music and performing for her growing fan base. As for the haters? She may cry about it—but she’s still standing strong.
