We said goodbye to a few Avengers at the end of Endgame – including Captain America, who passed his iconic shield on to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, a.k.a. The Falcon, to take up Cap’s mantle.

And he previously said there was “probably not” any possibility he would reprise his role on Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier during a November 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“To stick the landing so well, it would be a shame to revisit,” he explained, but also added, “Unless there was something very unique that we felt the need to reveal.”

However, he quickly tempered hopes, saying, “For now, it feels like, let’s just be content with how well it ended.”

But a recent report from Deadline claims that Chris is in talks to reprise his role as Cap “in some form” – in at least one Marvel property and a second film after that.

According to the outlet, “things had changed in recent months as the idea was floated of [Chris] Evans returning to the MCU as [Steve] Rogers to see if there was any interest and as the weeks went by, Evans became more game to the idea with the two sides coming to agreement at the top of the year.”

So, could Chris possibly be returning as Cap? Well, apparently, The Falcon taking up the mantle of Cap wasn’t a done deal. In a recent interview with The Jess Cagle Show, Anthony elaborated on the premise of Disney+’s upcoming Falcon and The Winter Soldier – it will deal with who should take up the Captain America mantle after Endgame.

“The show, the idea of the show is basically, you know, and at the end of Avengers: Endgame, Cap decided he was going into retirement and he asked me if I would take up the shield, but at no point in time, did I agree to or say that I would be Captain America,” Anthony said. “So the show walks the line of who is going to take up the shield and who’s going to be Captain America if Steve isn’t coming back.”

That seems to leaves a door open for Chris’ return, right?

Not so fast! Chris went on Twitter and seemingly responded to rumors that he’ll be suiting up as Cap again.

“News to me,” he tweeted on Thursday (January 14) afternoon, hours after Deadline published the article.

In another tweet, he wrote, “Some of the gif responses are priceless,”, along with laughing crying emojis. “Good work, everyone.”

That may be enough to shut down the rumors. Then again, he could just be playing coy.

In the meantime, we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
