Sean “Diddy” Combs made headline when he revealed how much he pays Sting every day to clear a sample.
The rapper stated that he is charged $5,000 per day for using Sting’s massive hit “Every Breath You Take” on “I’ll Be Missing You.”
It all began with a resurfaced 2018 interview where Sting was asked if it was true that he received money every day from Diddy for sampling his song. Sting confirmed at the time that he gets $2,000 each day for the sample. He also confirmed that Diddy asked him for permission to use the song after the fact, and thus has to pay him legally every day for the rest of his life. Sting added:
“We’re very good friends now. It was a beautiful version of that song.”
Diddy then took to Twitter after the video resurfaced, clarifying:
“Nope. 5K a day. Love to my brother @OfficialSting.”
Days after though, Diddy took back what he said, tweeting:
“I want y’all to understand I was joking! It’s called being Facetious.”
Diddy went on, clarifying:
“Me and [Sting] have been friends for a long time! He never charged me $3K or $5K a day for Missing You. He probably makes more than $5K a day from one of the biggest songs in history.”
