One of Saved By The Bell’s OG stars, Dustin Diamond, has received a grim diagnosis: he has stage 4 small cell carcinoma.
Dustin’s team confirmed the actor’s cancer diagnosis on Thursday (January 14), sharing a statement on the actor’s Facebook page.
“At this time we can confirm that Dustin does have cancer,” the statement reads. “Dustin will disclose more information once it is available and a plan moving forward is made.”
“We ask everyone to respect Dustin’s privacy during this difficult time,” the statement continued. “All positivity and prayers are appreciated.”
According to a member of his team, via Entertainment Tonight, it’s still unclear whether the cancer is terminal.
His rep also told People, “We can confirm that Dustin does have cancer. It’s very serious, though we are still waiting for more details, which we will have shortly.”
“He’s in a lot of pain,” the rep adds.
On Thursday, (January 21), his rep gave an update to People that the Saved By The Bell alum has already sought treatment for stage 4 small cell carcinoma, a cancer that commonly occurs in lungs, but can also manifest in the prostate or gastrointestinal tract – he has already finished his first round of chemotherapy.
According to NBC News, a second round of chemotherapy is being scheduled. Dustin will also begin physical therapy in the near future.
Dustin is best known for playing Screech in the 90s teen sitcom Saved by The Bell – and many of his co-stars have shown their support for him on social media following news of his cancer diagnosis.
“I connected with Dustin earlier this evening and although the news of his diagnosis is heartbreaking, we remain positive that he’ll overcome this,” Mario Lopez captioned a photo of him and Dustin together. “Praying for him & his family and for a speedy recovery. God Bless.”
Sharing a throwback photo of Dustin on Instagram, Lark Voorhies wrote in the caption, “I’d like to take the time to send special love and special best wishes to Dustin Diamond, who is one of my dearest friends. Dustin, all the many in your close circle who know you to be the great person that you are, are truly pulling for you and praying for the best outcome,” she wrote.
Praying for Dustin’s speedy recovery!
