Ed Sheeran is back—and he’s switching things up in a big way.
The global superstar just dropped his newest single, “Azizam,” and it’s not just a song—it’s the kickoff to an entirely new era in his music. Drawing inspiration from Persian sounds, rhythms, and melodies, “Azizam” is a vibrant, heartfelt celebration of cultural connection, experimentation, and something totally fresh for Ed.
For fans wondering what “Azizam” means, it’s a Persian term of endearment—roughly translated as “my dear” or “my beloved.” And that sense of intimacy and affection is woven throughout the track, from the title to the lyrics to the lush, hypnotic production.
So where did this come from? Ed credits Swedish-Iranian producer Ilya Salmanzadeh for sparking the creative direction. In a post on Instagram, Ed explained:
“I wrote ‘Azizam’ after Ilya Salmanzadeh suggested trying out making music inspired by his Persian heritage and culture. I love learning about music and different cultures the more I travel and connect with people. It was like opening a door to a completely new and exciting world. I loved how a lot of rhythms, scales, melodies and instruments were different but similar to the Irish trad music I had grown up with. It was showing to me music connects us all, and really is a universal language. This whole album is about being playful, explorative, and celebratory.”
That spirit of exploration really comes through in the track. From the very first few notes, “Azizam” feels different—there’s a new texture, a new energy. It’s got that signature Sheeran warmth, but with a bold, rhythmic edge that sets it apart from anything he’s released before.
Lyrically, the song is romantic and evocative. Sheeran sings:
