Ed Sheeran has won the battle!
The courts have found that the 32-year-old singer-songwriter did not in fact copy Marvin Gaye’s iconic song “Let’s Get It On” when he wrote his mega hit single “Thinking Out Loud.”
The heirs of Marvin Gaye’s co-writer for the track had argued that Ed along with Warner Music Group and Sony Music Publishing owed them money due to copyright infringement.
Ed reportedly stated in court that if he was found to be guilty, he would end his music career:
“If that happens, I’m done, I’m stopping.”
He also ended up missing his grandmother’s funeral because of the trial.
At the trial, Ed said that he wrote the song while at home in England with his friend Amy Wadge. He had been inspired by his grandparents and a new romantic relationship.
His lawyer Ilene Farkas stated that similarities in the chord progressions and rhythms of the two tracks were “the letters of the alphabet of music,” adding:
“These are basic musical building blocks that songwriters now and forever must be free to use, or all of us who love music will be poorer for it.”
