Elton John and Chappell Roan’s friendship is the definition of a modern-day mentorship.

The legendary musician, 77, recently opened up about his admiration for the rising star, 27, revealing that they’ve formed a close bond—and it all started with a FaceTime call.

“I first heard of ‘Pink Pony Club’ about three years ago. Then I started to FaceTime her personally and just fell in love with her,” Elton shared in an interview with Them. “I loved who she was, what she talked about, how brave she was, her story.”

Elton, who is known for championing young talent, was drawn to Chappell’s fearless authenticity.

“I love her bravery and the fact she’s not scared to speak out and she won’t do something if she doesn’t want to,” he said. “If you haven’t got the energy and it is taking your creative juices away, don’t do it. She’s not afraid to say that, and I love her for that.”

The music icon has taken Chappell under his wing, offering guidance whenever she needs it.

“I have to say, when I’m FaceTiming her, I’m a bit in awe of her because I think she’s so great,” he admitted. “And I’m just there to say, ‘Listen, if anything happens and you’re not sure about it, just FaceTime me or email me.’ I’m just there for her. She’s doing very well.”

Their connection recently played out on stage when Chappell performed a moving cover of Elton’s classic hit “Your Song” at the 2025 Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars Viewing Party.
