Eminem is offering an apology to Rihanna for a leaked song where he appeared to side with Chris Brown.
On Thursday (December 17), Eminem (real neame: Marshall Mathers) dropped a surprise album titled Music to be Murdered By – Side B. The album, which is also a companion album to his 11th studio LP, Music To Be Murdered By, features 16 tracks – one of which has been getting a lot of attention.
In the track “Zeus,” Eminem raps: “But, me, long as I re-promise to be honest / And wholeheartedly, apologies, Rihanna / For that song that leaked, I’m sorry, Ri / It wasn’t meant to cause you grief. Regardless, it was wrong of me.”
In case you’re wondering what that was all about, here’s a quick refresher:
Way back 2007 to 2009, Rihanna and Chris Brown used to date – and reconciled briefly in 2012 before calling it quits for good. But prior to their 2009 breakup, one incident got particularly messy and hit the headlines big time – Chris assaulted Rihanna after attending a party, which left her with visible bruising, swelling and a split lip. Chris was ordered to do community service and received five years probation.
Eminem and Rih have collaborated several times in the years that followed – like their 2010 hit “Love The Way You Lie” and 2013 collab “Monster” – and the two artists appeared to have a pretty good working relationship.
Fast forward to November 2019, a song, allegedly by Eminem, got leaked – it contained lyrics wherein the rapper appeared to side with Chris Brown following the 2009 assault. The lyric in question? “’Of course I side with Chris Brown, I’d beat a b—h down too.’
It was also reported that the song had actually never been released – and that it was obtained illegally.
Eminem’s rep has since addressed the leak. “This is a leak of something that’s over 10 years old,’ Dennis Dennehy said in a statement at the time. “After Eminem recorded it, he scrapped it, and rewrote it. Obviously he and Rihanna have a great relationship.”
Time jump to present day, Eminem totally namedropped Riri in his outright apology for the whole sitch.
ICYMI, Eminem also had a cameo in Saturday Night Live earlier this month, appearing on Pete Davidson’s sketch parodying his song, “Stan.”
