Did Ariana Grande just throw shade at ex-fiance Pete Davidson?
Ari kicked off her new era on Thursday (October 22), dropping the new single “Positions.” In it, she sweetly sings about new love, which many fans believe is a reference to beau Dalton Gomez. However, a certain lyric seriously has fans wondering if she may also have thrown shade at Pete:
“Heaven sent you to me. I’m just hoping I don’t repeat history,” she sings, seemingly emphasizing “repeat” as individual syllables, which sounded like “re” and “peat.”
Fans on Twitter were all fired up about the perceived dig, with many tweeting things like, “WAIT DID YALL CATCH THAT?? i’m just hoping i don’t re-PETE history maybe… i’m leaping,” and “Ariana really said im just hoping i dont re(pete) history”; some pointed out, “omg yall she said ‘i’m just hoping i don’t re-PETE history’ and took a break in between re PETE; and others speculated, “‘re-PETE history’ did u get the sense ??”
Ari and Pete had a whirlwind romance in 2018 – and even got engaged after a few months of dating. However, the pair called it quits in October of the same year. They’ve since both moved on from their past relationship – Ari is now dating luxury home realtor Dalton Gomez (they became Instagram official in June); Pete has been romantically linked with a number of high profile celebs including Sandra Bullock, Margaret Qualley and Kaia Gerber.
