Freddie Prinze Jr. is opening up about how he and his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar, have managed to stay out of the Hollywood spotlight for so many years. Married since 2002 and proud parents of two, the famously private couple has always kept a low profile. In a recent episode of the Oldish podcast, the 48-year-old actor shared some insight into their choice to keep things low-key.
During the podcast, co-host Randy Spelling commented on how Freddie and Sarah have managed to stay out of the limelight, to which Freddie replied, “That’s by choice, though. You can control it to a certain degree.”
For Freddie, avoiding the Hollywood scene comes down to being intentional about where they go and how they spend their time. “I don’t know how deliberate [other celebrities] are in trying to avoid that BS,” he explained. “I know how easy it’s been for us because I don’t go anywhere. I don’t go to parties. People don’t see Sarah and I out and about at the popular places. We have our restaurants that we like, and they’re not super trendy in places where paparazzi hang out. So we’re good at avoiding it.”
Freddie made it clear that he’s not judging other celebrities who choose a more public lifestyle, but he does believe that privacy is achievable if you’re willing to make certain sacrifices. “I’m not trying to sh-t on anyone,” he clarified, “but it’s not that hard [to avoid attention,] if you really [want to.]”
Sometimes, however, paparazzi still find ways to track them down. Freddie shared a clever tactic he uses to dodge the photographers who occasionally camp out at the bottom of their street. “There’s times where [paparazzi] wait at the bottom of our street, but there’s people that are way more famous than me on my street,” he said with a laugh. “So I’ll just make sure they leave first. They’ll go follow Schwarzenegger and leave me alone. You know what I mean?”
Freddie also highlighted just how un-Hollywood his life truly is. “And I can count on one hand how many clubs I’ve been [to] my whole life,” he added, emphasizing that the club scene has never really been their thing. It’s a lifestyle choice that has certainly worked for them, allowing their relationship to grow without the constant media frenzy that surrounds many celebrity couples.
The rare times that Sarah Michelle and Freddie are spotted together, it’s usually when they’re out for a quiet dinner—such as the rare photos taken of the couple dining together last year. But even then, these sightings are few and far between, a testament to their success in maintaining a private, grounded life amidst Hollywood’s glitz and glamour.
For Freddie and Sarah, it’s all about sticking to the places they love and keeping their private moments just that—private.
