Gabrielle Union is speaking candidly for the first time about her husband Dwyane Wade’s cancer diagnosis, opening up about how the journey has affected their family.
During an appearance on Today on Thursday morning (February 27), the actress and author shared her perspective on supporting Dwyane through the difficult period. She was in New York City promoting her latest movie, Riff Raff, but took a moment to address her husband’s health.
Last month, Dwyane revealed that he had undergone surgery in December 2023 to remove 40% of his kidney following a cancer diagnosis. Gabrielle described the moment as deeply traumatic for him.
“Obviously, him getting that diagnosis was traumatic for him, you know, being faced with your own mortality in your early 40s,” she explained. “You’re like, ‘Am I going to be here to see my family? Who am I without this big life? Without this healthy body?’ But you also don’t understand the journey and the toll it takes on your marriage, on your family, on your kids.”
She also shared how it was difficult for Dwyane to embrace vulnerability in the healing process. “He was a little more hesitant to take us on that journey of healing,” she continued. “That level of vulnerability, to go through removal of a good chunk of his kidney and the healing that involved, he needed us to be OK with his vulnerability. But more than that, he needed to be OK with his vulnerability. It was a challenge to give grace and receive it.”
Gabrielle’s words highlight the emotional depth of the experience—not just for Dwyane, but for their whole family.
