Over the weekend, the music industry was shook by the untimely death of GRAMMY-nominated producer, SOPHIE, who passed away in a climbing accident on Saturday (January 30) – she was 34.

The producer and DJ’s labels shared the sad news in a statement on Twitter. “Tragically our beautiful SOPHIE passed away this morning after a terrible accident,” Transgressive and Future Classic wrote.

“True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell,” the statement continued. “She will always be here with us. The family thank everyone for their love and support and request privacy at this devastating time.”

Throughout her career, SOPHIE has released her own music – Beyonce used one of her songs in one of one of her Ivy Park x Adidas collection ads – and worked with several artists, including Madonna, Kim Petras and more, as a producer. She was also one of Charli XCX’s frequent collaborators.

Charli XCX once opened up to Variety of their close friendship and working together: “When I started my music career at 14, playing at raves in London, I was very interested in electronic music — the Ed Banger label, Uffie and Sebastien and artists like that who were making very progressive and hard music. I had tried to replicate that style but I was never able to, because my skills as a producer just weren’t there, and I found it really difficult to communicate my vision to a lot of people I worked with for many years. It was only when I met Sophie and then A.G. that I finally found what I was searching for.”

“We just immediately spoke the same language — we didn’t even have to talk, they immediately understood the kinds of sounds I was trying to achieve. So it was very easy for me to leave everything behind at that moment, because I’d found what I’d been searching for, for so long,” she added.

Shortly after news of her passing hit the headlines, the hashtag “Here For Charli” became a trending topic on Twitter as fans showed their support for the Charli XCX following the loss of her friend and collaborator.

“not only were they magic together musically, they seemed to have fun together and a genuine friendship. miss u sophie and my heart goes out to charli. #hereforcharli #hereforcharlixcx,” one fan wrote.

“hearing of SOPHIE’s passing really shook me when i checked here yesterday. her music was so influential, and it introduced me to some of the best music artists out there. sending love to charli xcx and everyone impacted by this. rest easy. #hereforcharli 💔,” another shared.

However, it appears the hashtah had many on Twitter confused as well – including TikTok star Charli D’Amelio, who tweeted: “I am looking through the “hereforcharli” hashtag and oh my goodness you are all so sweet to me you have no idea how much your kind words warm my heart I am so lucky to have you all by my side!! I love you bebs.”

Many fans replied to her tweet to explain that the hashtag was in fact for Charli XCX.

“it’s for Charli XCX because her great friend and collaborator SOPHIE just passed away in tragic circumstances,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Charli please understand that this hashtag was made for someone who passed and it was to help their grieving friends and family feel supported by fans, no hate but please just pay a little more attention,” another commented.

So, that solves the case of mistaken identity.
