John Legend is speaking out about his estranged relationship with Kanye West.

The 43-year-old singer opened up about why he and Kanye are no longer close in a new interview on The Axe Files podcast.

John and Kanye, 45, used to be close friends and would often collaborate on music together. The two hit a rough patch when Kanye began to show massive support for Donald Trump after Trump won the presidential election in 2016. John has been very vocal in his dislike for Trump.

In the interview, John revealed that it was Kanye’s support for Trump, as well as Kanye’s failed presidential bid in 2020, that really strained their friendship. John shared:

“Well, you know, we aren’t friends as much as we used to be because I honestly think because we publicly disagreed on his running for office, his supporting Trump, I think it became too much for us to sustain our friendship, honestly.”

He also stated that Kanye was not happy with him when he did not support Kanye’s decision to run for president, saying:

“I wasn’t alone in that, but, you know, he was not happy about that.

And we really haven’t been close since then.”

John also had this to say about Kanye and who he is as a person:

“I think he’s been very open with who he is and his struggles with mental health. And he’s very real, honestly. So I think there’s a lot about him that people don’t get.

Like he’s been pretty upfront with his opinions, his struggles, all the things that he’s dealing with. And I think what you see with him is pretty much what you get.”
