Cameron Diaz is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, with many blockbusters under her belt.

But it’s been several years since we’ve seen Cameron onscreen – her last film was 2014’s Annie. Now, the A-list Hollywood star has finally opened up about why she stepped away from acting.

Talking to her friend Gwyneth Paltrow in an episode of In Goop Health: The Sessions, Cameron said, “I just decided that I wanted different things out of my life. I had gone so hard for so long, working, making films and it’s such a grind. I didn’t really make any space for my personal life.”

As for what it was like to walk away from a successful movie career and she responded, “A peace. I got a peace in my soul. I finally was taking care of myself.”

“When you’re making a movie, it’s a perfect excuse — they own you. You’re there for 12 hours a day for months on end and you have no time for anything else,” she continued. “Actors are infantilized. We’re put in a position where everything is taken care of for us.”

She also said she wanted to become “self-sufficient” – she felt more than ready to start “putting all the pieces of my life together the way that I wanted it to be put together, not how other people thought it should go.”

Earlier this year, Cameron welcomed her first child with hubby Benji Madden – a baby boy they named Raddix.

In the same interview, Cameron told Gwyneth that she “would not have become a mother if it wasn’t for you. I used to tell you, ‘I’m not having kids.’ And you would say, ‘No, you are having kids…you’re getting married!’”

“You always said, ‘You have to. You don’t understand, if you don’t do this you will be so sad you didn’t do it.’ And so I credit you so much. You never let up on me,” she continued.

To which Gwyneth responded, “I could see what a natural mother you are – some women aren’t – but you were born to do it.”
