Drew Starkey is no stranger to the spotlight, but when it comes to social media, he prefers to keep things simple. The 31-year-old actor, known for his role in Queer, recently opened up to Dazed about his cautious approach to online interactions and how it ties into his personal identity.
In the interview, Drew shared that his social media usage is primarily for work—promoting projects rather than oversharing personal details. His reason? The online world can feel more like a chaotic echo chamber than a meaningful connection point.
“You can say anything you want online under the guise of any identity,” Drew explained, shaking his head. “Even the positive stuff, I don’t know what’s true or not. Because it’s like, would these people say these things to my face? I feel like if I’m on the internet all day it can become delusional, and I don’t want to lose my mind.”
The themes explored in Queer also struck a deeply personal chord for the actor. The story delves into the complexities of human connection and vulnerability—topics Drew admits he has grappled with throughout his life.
“That fear of someone truly getting to know who you are is one that I struggled with for, I mean, the majority of my life,” he shared. “That can stop people in their tracks.”
His role in Queer allowed him to confront some of those struggles and explore them in a creative, reflective way. It’s a story about the risks and rewards of letting others see the real you, and it’s clear Drew connected with the material on a deeper level.
By keeping his online interactions limited, Drew focuses on what truly matters to him: authenticity, meaningful connections, and his craft. In an era where social media often blurs the line between public and private life, his approach feels refreshing—a reminder that sometimes less is more.
