Lorde is getting personal about her health journey—and she’s not holding anything back.

The 28-year-old “Man of the Year” singer recently appeared on Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast, where she opened up about everything from her upcoming album Virgin to her decision to come off birth control. Her fourth album is due out June 25, and from the sound of it, this new era is about embracing change and trusting herself more than ever.

Speaking candidly on the show, Lorde—whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor—explained why she decided to stop hormonal birth control after years of using it.

“I just need to see what happens when I come off it,” she said. “I don’t know. It was just a general band-aid rip that I need to do at. It was quite gnarly, not going to lie. It was so crazy, so crazy.”

She didn’t sugarcoat the experience, either. The shift took a real toll on her mental health.

“I’m quite scarred from that and my mood was really crazy, and I don’t know, it can be a really crazy transition,” she continued. “But I also was like, ‘Oh, I feel like myself in this different way,’ and I still haven’t arrived at what the right thing for me is. I keep—I don’t know—it’s been a whole journey, the birth control. It’s sort of like no perfect solution, but whatever you do, you’re killing it.”

Lorde also spoke about how important it was for her to finally start tuning in to her body’s signals after years of ignoring them.

“I’m proud of you for listening to your body because it’s quite hard to do,” she said, seemingly reflecting on her own growth. “I only started listening to my body two years ago. I was like, ‘Wow, she’s telling me something.’”

It’s a refreshingly honest moment from an artist who’s never been afraid to push boundaries—whether it’s in music or in her personal life. The experience clearly fed into the creative process behind Virgin, which she’s teased as her most raw and self-aware work yet.

Fans won’t have to wait long to hear what this new chapter sounds like. With Virgin dropping at the end of the month, it seems Lorde is ready to reintroduce herself—not just as a musician, but as a woman in tune with her body, her boundaries, and her truth.
