Hilary Duff has some sad news to share.
The Lizzie McGuire star was set to reprise her role as the titular character in the upcoming reboot of the hit Disney show from the early 2000s. The reboot was initially announced in August of 2019, and actually filmed two episodes.
However, production hit some snags – in January, the show’s creator, Terri Minsky, left the project after just two episodes. But a spokesperson said at the time that production is only on pause while they the search for a new showrunner.
The reboot’s premise follows an almost-30-year-old Lizzie navigating life in New York City, in a similar vein as the OG show, which followed the experiences of a 13—year-old Lizzie. But, apparently, there were some issues with “limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”
Both Hilary and Terri have expressed hopes about having the show move to another streaming service. In July, the 33-year-old actress shared that they were regrouping with Disney to try to work out the project.
However, Hilary’s recent update just confirmed: the Lizzie McGuire reboot is officially no longer happening.
“I’ve been so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life. She has made such a lasting impact on many, including myself. To see the fans’ loyalty and love for her, to this day, means so much to me,” she wrote on in a note on Instagram.
“I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen,” she continued. “I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her.”
“I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align,” she added, concluding her message with a reference to The Lizzie McGuire Movie, “Hey now, this is what 2020s made of.”
