The Independent Spirit Awards once again put the spotlight on bold, creative storytelling, with the 40th annual ceremony held in Santa Monica on Feb. 22. Hosted by the always-hilarious Aidy Bryant—returning for a second year—the event honored the best in independent film and television.

The big winner of the night was Anora, which took home the coveted Best Feature award. Sean Baker, the visionary director behind the film, won Best Director, while the film’s breakout star, Mikey Madison, earned Best Lead Performance.

Netflix’s Baby Reindeer also had a triumphant night, with Richard Gadd, Nava Mau, and Jessica Gunning all receiving recognition. Gadd and Gunning won Best Lead and Best Supporting Performance, respectively, while Mau was named Breakthrough Performer. Meanwhile, FX’s Shōgun continued its awards season dominance by clinching Best New Scripted Series.

Sean Wang’s Dìdi made history by sweeping both debut film categories—winning Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay. A remarkable achievement for a filmmaker on the rise.

With a mix of established indie darlings and fresh new voices, the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards once again proved why independent film remains a driving force in storytelling. A night of well-earned victories, quirky speeches, and genuine appreciation for the art of filmmaking, it was exactly the celebration that indie cinema deserves.
