Ever since Taylor Swift dropped her 10-minute version of “All Too Well” and the accompanying music video last year, everyone’s been buzzing about it and speculating on who the song was really about — with many fans becoming more convinced than ever that this track was in fact written about her ex, Jake Gyllenhaal.

The 32-year-old Red (Taylor’s Version) singer brought that romance back into the spotlight with the release of both the song and the video. Taylor and Jake famously dated for many months back in 2010. Many of her songs in the Red album were thought to be about Jake, especially All Too Well.

Now, in a new profile for Esquire, the 41-year-old actor finally broke his silence on the matter. Addressing Taylor’s lyrics, particularly those of All Too Well, he stated:

“It has nothing to do with me.”

He elaborated on his thoughts on her song, saying:

“It’s about her relationship with her fans. It is her expression.

Artists tap into personal experiences for inspiration, and I don’t begrudge anyone that.”

Without directly naming Taylor, Jake went on to say this:

‘At some point, I think it’s important when supporters get unruly that we feel a responsibility to have them be civil and not allow for cyberbullying in one’s name.

That begs for a deeper philosophical question. Not about any individual, per se, but a conversation that allows us to examine how we can – or should, even – take responsibility for what we put into the world, our contributions into the world.”

He added:

“Is this out future? Is anger and divisiveness our future? Or can we be empowered and empower others while simultaneously putting empathy and civility into the dominant conversation?

That’s the discussion we should be having.”

Jake shared that he has not listened to the Red (Taylor’s Version) album, but acknowledged the attention that came about due to the release of the album and the song:

“I’m not unaware that there’s interest in my life.

My life is wonderful. I have a relationship that is truly wonderful, and I have a family I love so much. And this whole period of time has made me realize that.”
