Jimmy Kimmel has a new role to add to his already impressive résumé: grandpa!

The 57-year-old host returned to Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night, May 20, after unexpectedly canceling the previous night’s show—and he had a pretty good reason for skipping work. His daughter Katie just gave birth!

“I am the host of the show. Thank you, thank you for coming, thank you for watching, thank you for joining us here in Hollywood,” Jimmy said as he opened the show. “We are back to work after an extra day off. You know, we were supposed to have a show last night, but we didn’t because my daughter had a baby last night.”

He went on to explain that some fans might not know about his older children. “My oldest daughter – you know, people don’t realize, people that know I have two little kids, they don’t know I have two older kids,” he said. “My oldest daughter, she’s 83-years-old. Her name is Katie. Katie and her husband Will had a baby girl right at the time we shoot our show last night. So I decided to be there instead of here.”

Jimmy, naturally, couldn’t resist cracking a joke about the baby’s name.

“The baby’s very healthy. Her name, they gave her a very cute name. Her name is Melania,” he quipped. “It’s Melanie Thee Stallion… her name is Patti. Like the melt, but with an ‘I’ not a ‘Y.’”

He later shared that Patti’s middle name is Joan, after his mother.

Jimmy shares Katie and her younger brother Kevin, 31, with his ex-wife Gina Maddy, to whom he was married from 1988 until 2003. He later married Molly McNearney in 2013, and they have two kids together—Jane, 10, and Billy, 8.

Katie and her husband Will tied the knot in September 2020. Now, nearly four years later, they’ve welcomed a daughter—and Jimmy is embracing grandparent life, jokes and all.
