John Mayer says he’s a changed man.
Once upon a time, the guy with the dazzling guitar skills captured everyone’s hearts by belting out super-relatable lyrics to the tune of poignant melodies. He famously dated some of Hollywood’s most beautiful stars – like Jennifer Aniston, Katy Perry, Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Taylor Swift.
During those times, he earned himself a rep for being a ladies’ man. He was also seen in a not-so-favorable light because of his controversial comments about his former flames.
But, now, John is saying that that’s all in the past and he’s way past his ladies’ man ways. And the 41-year-old crooner is opening up about his realizations.
“I get rejected a lot since I became PR poison for people,” he admitted in an October episode of his Instagram Live show Current Mood. “I really have to make a direct connection with somebody … I don’t think that people are into the idea of, ‘Hey, I snagged Mayer.’ “
But it was the reality check he needed. According to the singer, he’s been single since splitting from Katy Perry four years ago. “I actually find that people not being into me brings a real level of reality into my life,” he said on the show. “Whereas when I was in my early 20s, where I couldn’t really miss, I really kind of abused that. That’s now out of the question.”
Billboard’s Legend of Live Awardee also talked about his past, where he admits that his earlier fame made him a “monster.”
“I probably had a run in my life where I wasn’t aware that there was anything I couldn’t have. And it made a monster out of me,” the “New Light” singer told opened up to Billboard in his recent cover story. But, now that he’s in his 40s, he’s accepting – and relishing – the fact that he has limitations. “And there’s something very freeing about you can’t. And that’s about the right age in your life where you go, ‘Yeah, you can’t.’”
But he knows that it will take time for people to get to know the new him and see him in a different light.
“Some people still say, ‘That guy’s a d*ck,’ ” he says. “And I go, ‘Well, any of that data you’re working off of is really old.’ I mean, I can tell you for sure that I haven’t been a d*ck in many years. That’s a really outdated take.”
He also one joked: “Sometimes I feel like people need to update their internal Wikipedia on me … Come to 2018, where my No. 1 girl is my therapist.”
It appears that John is mainly focusing on his music – and he has a new goal: to “restore the role of the singer-songwriter as truthsayer, thought leader and moral guide,” as Billboard put it.
“Believe me when I tell you,” he says, “there is going to be a massive shift toward telling the truth again.”
In other John Mayer dating news…
Halsey has responded to those John Mayer romance rumors going around.
Following her recent split with on-again-off-again boyfriend G-Eazy, John and Halsey began sparking romance rumors with their friendly exchanges on social media.
On Wednesday (November 7), the “Without Me” singer shut down those rumors with a few rhetorical questions.
“I just had a ground breaking idea. What if…we let female artists…have friends…without assuming that they are sleeping together?” she wrote in a tweet. “I know I know. It’s like, completely ambitious but like, imagine if we like, tried?”
Apparently, John and Halsey have been friends for a while. And their back-and-forth exchange is all in good fun between friends.
“I met John Mayer at a bar. We’re like platonic mates now,” Halsey told Billboard back in August 2017. “If I think something is funny, I run it by him first, because he’s a comedic genius. He’ll tell me if it’s funny, but he’ll tell me if it’s not. I started answering people on Twitter by their first names. Someone will be like, ‘Halsey f**king sucks,’ and I’ll be like, ‘Stacy, wow, calm down.’ He loved that.”
And, hey, a guy and a girl being just pals is not unheard of.
