Justin Timberlake has struck a plea deal in his DWI case, and the outcome is far less severe than initially anticipated. The singer’s legal team, led by his attorney Edward Burke Jr., successfully negotiated with prosecutors to have the original DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) charge reduced. Timberlake will instead plead guilty to a lesser traffic violation, which means no criminal offense will go on his record.

According to TMZ, the deal Timberlake secured involves pleading guilty to Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI). While the term “impaired” might sound alarming, it’s important to note that this charge is not the same as a drunk driving offense. The consequences for this lesser offense are much lighter, with potential penalties ranging from a $300 to $500 fine, depending on the judge’s final ruling.

The official hearing to present the plea deal before the court is set for Friday, September 13, where the judge will determine the exact fine Timberlake will face. This resolution avoids the more serious consequences associated with a DWI charge, which could have carried harsher penalties, including possible jail time.

The case stems from Timberlake’s arrest in Sag Harbor, New York, back in June. After being pulled over by an officer, Timberlake was charged with DWI. He initially entered a not guilty plea in early August, marking the start of the legal proceedings.

However, Timberlake’s case hit a snag when he refused to take a Breathalyzer test at the scene. Under New York law, refusing to submit to such a test triggers an automatic suspension of the driver’s license for one year, regardless of the final outcome of the case. This means Timberlake will still face the inconvenience of having his license suspended for 12 months, despite the reduced charge.

The plea deal is undoubtedly a relief for Timberlake, who was staring down much steeper consequences if the DWI charge had stuck.
