Keke Palmer is speaking openly about her recent split from Darius Jackson and the emotional journey she’s been on since. In a People cover story, the 31-year-old singer and Nope star discussed her relationship’s highs and lows and shared details from her upcoming book, Master of Me, which covers her experiences in love, motherhood, and healing.
Reflecting on the early days of their relationship, Keke described a deep, almost spiritual connection with Darius. “It was like, not only is this the person, but this is the time,” she said. “It felt very spiritual for Darius and I. We had separate lonelinesses, and we created a space for us to exist in that loneliness together. And then we wanted to have a son. Leo was very planned.” Their son Leo, born earlier in 2023, was a pivotal part of their relationship, but Keke acknowledges that becoming parents added stress to an already complicated situation.
Things began unraveling publicly when Darius criticized Keke’s choice of dress at an Usher concert, sparking headlines and rumors. What wasn’t visible to the public was the struggle behind closed doors, as their relationship began to feel “unhappy and unhealthy.” Keke alluded to a challenging atmosphere even before the social media incident. “There was a lot going on,” she admitted, hinting at underlying tensions that contributed to the strain.
The situation escalated to the point where Keke sought a temporary restraining order against Darius, alleging instances of violence and an attempted strangling captured on video. Darius, on his end, has also accused Keke of abuse, leading to a very public and painful battle. “It got so out of control,” she shared. “The only way I knew how to bring order was through the court.” These legal steps were difficult but necessary for her to protect herself and her son.
Reflecting on what may have led to the relationship’s breakdown, Keke said, “Having a baby was a big stressor.” The sudden shift in their lives and the demands of fame added even more tension. “Not just with my romantic relationships, but with family and friends, it’s always become a burden. Too many voices get in. It can make everybody else not trust you. It’s hard to explain.” The spotlight intensified their issues, making it hard to resolve things privately.
Despite the struggles, Keke holds a balanced view of her relationship with Darius, noting that it was far from simple. “I wish I could say he was terrible the entire time or that I was…but it wasn’t that black-and-white, and that was the problem. I didn’t want my son to think his father is a monster, because I don’t.” Her words reflect a desire for her son to have a positive view of both his parents, even if they’re no longer together.
Keke hopes that her journey can help others in similar situations. “Walking away is the only way,” she advised, encouraging anyone feeling trapped or in a painful situation to prioritize their well-being. It’s a tough lesson, but one that she learned through her own experiences.
Now, as Darius begins his journey in the military, Keke feels a sense of peace about the future. “I’m so proud of him and happy for him. I feel very at ease now knowing things are under control.”
Keke’s new book, Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative, releases on November 19, where she explores her journey in self-discovery, relationships, and motherhood, hoping her story will inspire others to find strength within themselves.
