Kelly Clarkson is countersuing her former management company, Starstruck Management Group, which is run by Narvel Blackstock, who also happens to be her estranged husband, Brandon Blackstock’s, dad.
Back in September, Starstruck filed a lawsuit against Kelly, claiming they’re owed $1.4 Million in unpaid commissions, alleging she has not paid the full commission this year for her work on The Voice and The Kelly Clarkson Show. They argue that she breached her verbal contract, negotiated by her attorney and business manager in 2007. The company also claims that she’ll owe at least $5.4 million by the end of 2020.
PEOPLE reports that Kelly is suing Starstruck for allegedly violating the California Labor Code by “procuring, offering, promising, or attempting to procure employment or engagements” without being properly licensed, and argues that all of their agreements, including their reported verbal contract in which she agreed to pay them 15 percent commission on her gross earnings, be “declared void and unenforceable.”
Brandon’s attorney Bryan Freedman responded to her argument in a statement to People:
“While Starstruck Management Group provided talent management services on her behalf, it did so at all times that CAA was her agency of record. It is unfortunate that Kelly is again attempting to avoid paying commissions that are due and owing to Starstruck to try and achieve some perceived advantage in her ongoing custody and divorce proceedings.”
Kelly met Brandon through Narvel, whom she started working with in 2007. They got married in June 2013, but split up in June of this year. She opened up about the breakup on her show, saying “2020 has brought a lot of change also to my personal life. Definitely didn’t see anything coming that came.”
