Kristin Cavallari is getting candid about her brief romance with Nick Lachey and the whirlwind of drama that surrounded her during that time.
The 37-year-old jewellery designer and former Laguna Beach star dated the 51-year-old singer in 2006, shortly after his high-profile divorce from Jessica Simpson. On a recent episode of her podcast, Let’s Be Honest, Kristin opened up about that chapter of her life, describing it as a wild ride that forever changed how she trusted people.
“This was a wild time in my life because I was, overnight, on the cover of every tabloid,” Kristin recalled. “I had so many paparazzi following my every move, waiting outside of my house.”
Kristin explained that her relationship with Nick became a media frenzy, partly because it followed his split from Jessica Simpson. “He had just gotten a divorce from Jessica Simpson. So this was, like, the biggest thing in 2006. It was a wild ride,” she said.
One of the most frustrating parts for Kristin was the constant comparisons to Jessica. The tabloids scrutinised everything about her, even accusing her of copying Jessica’s red-carpet poses. “There are like four f***ing poses you can do on a red carpet,” Kristin said, exasperated. “Like, my hand on my hip? You think I’m stealing her poses? Like, what?”
But it wasn’t just the paparazzi that left Kristin feeling exposed. She shared a shocking story about how her trust in a close friend was betrayed during that time.
“I was out one night with my friend, and Nick was there, and we were all sitting together. We were at a club,” Kristin recounted. “She acted like she was taking a photo of just me and her, right? Nick is in it next to me, but he’s not looking at the camera because everyone thought it was a picture of me and [my friend], but Nick is actually in it a little bit.”
What happened next left Kristin stunned. “So [she] sold this picture for $2,500, and it’s not even a good picture. It’s an awful photo, in fact, it doesn’t even look like we’re together. It looks like they took two pictures of us and put them together.”
Kristin described how the experience deeply impacted her. “That was kind of the first real sense of betrayal I felt,” she admitted. “Like wow, I’m not even safe with people I think are my friends. That was my introduction to shadiness.”
