Law Roach, the brilliant mind behind Zendaya’s iconic looks, recently delved into their journey together, shedding light on the early days when some fashion brands were hesitant to collaborate with them. Law revealed that Zendaya continues to stand by their decision to ban these brands from her red carpet appearances, with only one notable exception.

Speaking on the Cutting Room Floor podcast, Law reminisced about their partnership, which began when Zendaya was just 14 years old. “I would write the big five. I would write Saint Laurent, Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, Dior. And they would all say no. ‘Try again next year,’ ‘she’s too green,’ ‘she’s not on our calendar,’ and I still have the receipts,” he candidly shared.

Even as Zendaya’s star rose, the doors of these prestigious fashion houses remained closed to them. “By the time she got to American Vogue, she still had never worn any of those designers. She still hasn’t.”

While Zendaya has occasionally donned pieces from these designers for editorial shoots, Law emphasized that they have maintained their stance against wearing them on the red carpet. However, there is one exception to this rule: Valentino, which notably signed Zendaya to a campaign in 2020.

“She still has never worn Dior on a carpet. She still has never worn Chanel on a carpet. She has still never worn Gucci on a carpet — any press, any appearance, never. Never. The first time she wore Valentino in public is when she had a contract, so when I said, ‘If you say no, it’ll be a no forever,’ that rang true for a long, long time,” Law recounted, underscoring the significance of their decision to maintain their integrity in the face of rejection.

Despite the initial challenges they encountered, Zendaya and Law Roach’s steadfast commitment to authenticity and artistic expression have solidified their status as a dynamic duo in the world of fashion. With each red carpet appearance, they continue to captivate audiences and push boundaries, proving that true style transcends the labels of luxury brands.
