Lizzo is opening up about what it’s like to live in the public eye—and how she’s dealt with backlash over the years.

The 37-year-old singer and Grammy winner joined the “Therapuss” podcast for a candid conversation about being “canceled,” her past controversies, and how she’s learned to handle criticism.

“I’ve been canceled a lot. I shouldn’t say I’ve been canceled, because I’m still going, but I’ve gotten backlash a lot,” Lizzo said. “Literally every single time I’ve received backlash I use it as a growing and learning lesson.”

She’s had more than a few headline-making moments, especially in 2023 when she was sued by three former dancers and a stylist. The lawsuits accused her of sexual harassment and creating a toxic work environment—claims Lizzo has firmly denied. In a 2024 interview, she stated, “I did nothing wrong.”

But her experience with public criticism goes back further than that. Lizzo recalled one of her first big missteps, which happened in 2019 when her smash hit “Good As Hell” was used in a Weight Watchers commercial—an ad campaign backed by none other than Oprah Winfrey.

“It was like, ‘Oprah wants to use your song,’ I lost my mind. I was like, ‘Oh my god Oprah knows who I am!’ I was like, ‘Yes! Yes,’” she shared.

However, what was supposed to be a career high quickly turned sour.

“I remember posting the commercial because I was so proud and everybody was like, ‘You’re f–king joking right, like this is promoting eating disorders. And I was like, ‘Oh my god.’ It broke my heart. It truly broke my heart,” she said.
