Matt Lucas has issued an apology to Millie Bobby Brown after the Stranger Things star called out critics and media outlets for making “disturbing” comments about her appearance.
Earlier this week, Millie, 21, took to social media to blast those scrutinising her looks, labelling the remarks as “bullying.” Among those she mentioned was the 51-year-old comedian, who had drawn comparisons between her and his iconic Little Britain character, Vicky Pollard.
Lucas had shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) featuring a side-by-side of Millie in a pink tracksuit with her blonde hair in a messy bun—an outfit reminiscent of his former character. The post sparked controversy, with some accusing him of mocking the actress.
Following Millie’s response, Lucas took to Instagram to clarify his intentions and apologise.
“Dear Millie, I just saw your post and wanted to respond, and provide some context,” he wrote. “Nearly 25 years ago, I co-wrote and appeared in a sketch show called Little Britain. There was a character in it called Vicky Pollard, who had blonde hair and always wore a pink top, and in the photo, you had blonde hair and wore a pink top, so I pointed out the similarity by posting one of her catchphrases.”
The British comedian insisted he had no intention of offending Millie or causing harm.
“I thought you looked terrific and I was mortified when the press wrote that I ‘slammed’ you, firstly because that’s not my style and secondly because I think you’re brilliant,” he explained. “I would not have posted it if I had thought it would have upset you but I realise it has and for that, I apologise. Matt x.”
