The Royal family is politically neutral – read: they’re not allowed to vote. Prince Harry actually touched on the topic during their appearance in ABC’s TIME 100 special back in September, sharing that he’s “not going to be able to vote here in the U.S.” and hasn’t “been able to vote in the U.K. my entire life.”

While the royal couple did not endorse anyone during the presidential campaigns, they have talked about the importance of voting.

Meghan Markle participated in the United State of Women’s virtual “Couch Party” titled “When All Women Vote” in August where she shared her thoughts on the importance of voting.

“When I think about voting and why this is so exceptionally important for all of us, I would frame it as: We vote to honor those who came before us and to protect those who will come after us,” Meghan expressed. “Because that is what community is all about and that’s specifically what this election is all about.”

She also addressed those who choose not to vote.

“If we aren’t part of the solution, we are part of the problem,” she added. “If you’re complacent, you’re complicit. In the fraught moment that we find our nation, exercising your right to vote isn’t simply being part of a solution, it’s being part of a legacy.”

In September, during her appearance with hubby Prince Harry in ABC’s TIME 100 special, she again spoke out about the importance of voting.

“Every four years, we’re told, ‘This is the most important election of our lifetime.’ But this one is,” she said. “When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard.”

And the Duchess of Sussex is practicing what she preaches. Entertainment Tonight reports that Meghan herself voted in the elections.

According to Newsweek and People, Meghan voting is a history-making move – as the first British Royal to take part in a U.S. presidential election.
