In the debut episode of her podcast “Confessions of a Female Founder,” Meghan Markle candidly discussed a health scare she faced after childbirth—postpartum preeclampsia. Speaking with Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, Meghan shared, “We both had very similar experiences—though we didn’t know each other at the time—with postpartum, and we both had preeclampsia. Postpartum preeclampsia. It’s so rare and so scary.”
Postpartum preeclampsia is a rare condition characterized by high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine, occurring after childbirth. If untreated, it can lead to seizures and other serious complications. Meghan emphasized the challenges of managing such a condition while fulfilling maternal duties, stating, “And you’re still trying to juggle all of these things, and the world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly. And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people—mostly for your children—but those things are huge medical scares.”
The Duchess did not specify during which pregnancy she experienced this complication. She and Prince Harry are parents to son Archie and daughter Lilibet. Meghan has previously been open about her health experiences, including a miscarriage in 2020. Her new podcast aims to shed light on the multifaceted challenges women face, blending personal anecdotes with broader discussions on entrepreneurship and motherhood.
