Meghan Markle’s BFF, Jessica Mulroney, has found herself at the center of controversy after lifestyle influencer Sasha Exeter called her out for her not-so-nice reaction when asked to use her platform to speak out on Black Lives Matter.
In a video post on Instagram Wednesday (June 10), which she dubbed “My ‘Amy Cooper’ Experience,” Sasha said Jessica “took offense” to her “very generic call to action” encouraging public figures to speak out amid the Black Lives Matter movement.
“What happened next was a series of very problematic behavior and antics that ultimately resulted in her sending me a threat in writing last Wednesday,” Sasha said in the video, later revealing that the alleged threat insinuated that her livelihood could be affected.
Jessica has since issued a public apology on social media, saying she “did not intend in any way to jeopardize her livelihood,” and acknowledged that she needs “to do better” when it comes to “engaging in the important and difficult conversation around race and injustice in our society.”
Following her apology, CTV issued a statement that it would be removing her show I Do Redo from the network’s channel and platform.
“Because recent conduct by one of our shows hosts, Jessica Mulroney conflicts with our commitment to diversity and equality, CTV has removed “I Do, Redo” from all Bell Media channels and platforms effective immediately,” the statement reads, in part.
Jessica also addressed the network’s decision in her statement on Twitter. “I respect the decision of CTV and have decided to step away from my professional engagement at this time. I’m going to take this time to reflect, learn and focus on my family,” she said, in part.
“I also want to take a moment to clarify that I have no intention of pursuing any legal action. I was wrong, and for that I am truly sorry,” she added.
Good Morning America has also announced that Jessica will no longer be appearing on the show, where she often served as a contributor.
As for how the Duchess is taking all this, a source told Entertainment Tonight that it was “painful” for Meghan to learn that one of her best friends could have made such “misguided and insensitive comments.”
The source also noted that Meghan is embarrassed that she has been dragged into her friend’s race controversy.
Another source shared similar sentiments with the Daily Mail. ‘Meghan is mortified that she’s been dragged into this complete mess. She said Jessica was in no way a racist, but the way she handled the situation was tone-deaf,” the source said.
