Hollywood is mourning the loss of Michelle Trachtenberg. The beloved actress, best known for her roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, has sadly passed away at the age of 39.
Police sources confirmed to The New York Post on Wednesday (February 26) that Michelle was found in a New York City apartment near Columbus Circle. Law enforcement officials have stated that her death is not being treated as suspicious.
A brief statement was released to JustJared.com, confirming the heartbreaking news: “It is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away. The family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time.”
According to the New York City Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call early Wednesday morning. In an official statement, they reported: “On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at approximately 0801 hours, police responded to a 911 call of an aided individual at 1 Columbus Place, within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct. Upon arrival, officers observed a 39-year-old female unconscious and unresponsive. EMS responded to the location and pronounced the victim deceased. Criminality is not suspected. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing.”
Michelle had reportedly undergone a liver transplant in recent months and was believed to be experiencing complications. However, the official cause of her death remains undetermined at this time.
A spokesperson for New York City’s medical examiner’s office confirmed to The New York Post on Thursday (February 27) that Michelle’s death certificate lists her cause and manner of death as “undetermined.”
Reports indicate that Michelle’s family objected to an autopsy, and due to New York’s public health laws, the medical examiner was legally required to honor their wishes. As a result, only an external examination was performed, limiting further investigation into the exact cause of her passing.
Michelle Trachtenberg’s career began at a young age, and she quickly became a household name. She rose to fame as a child star on The Adventures of Pete & Pete before taking on the lead role in Harriet the Spy in 1996.
Her portrayal of Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer cemented her status as a fan favorite, and she later made waves as the devious Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl. Beyond television, she starred in films such as EuroTrip, Black Christmas, and 17 Again, while also making appearances on shows like Weeds, Criminal Minds, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Meet, Marry, Murder.
