Miley Cyrus is revisiting one of the most talked-about moments from her teen years, and this time, she’s calling out her mum, Tish Cyrus, for the idea that sparked it all.
In a candid chat with her sister Brandi Cyrus on Spotify’s Billions Club series, Miley opened up about her infamous 2009 Teen Choice Awards performance. At just 16, the “Flowers” singer stirred headlines by dancing around a pole attached to an ice cream cart while performing her hit “Party in the U.S.A.”
Reflecting on the controversy, Miley didn’t hold back. “This is going to be no surprise to you,” she teased before asking Brandi, “Do you know whose idea that was?”
When Brandi guessed their mum, Tish, Miley confirmed, “Yup, that was my mom’s idea. So she always lets me take the blame.”
It turns out Tish wasn’t exactly there to weather the fallout. “When I got in trouble the next day, you know who was nowhere to be found? Tish Cyrus,” Miley joked, pointing out her mum’s Houdini-like disappearing act.
Though the performance raised eyebrows and stirred controversy at the time, Miley remembers the night for a completely different reason. “The thing that I remember most about that performance was it was the first time I ever wore real diamond jewellery on stage,” she shared.
Turning to the camera with a grin, she added, “So you guys remember a little old ice cream truck, I remember the diamonds.”
This cheeky look back at one of her early career controversies highlights Miley’s ability to laugh at herself—and her family’s quirks. Now 32, she’s clearly made peace with her past and isn’t afraid to call out those who put her in the spotlight, pole and all.
For Miley, the pole performance might have been a scandal back then, but it’s just another chapter in the journey of a girl who grew up in the public eye—diamonds and all.
