Miley Cyrus, 32, arrived at JFK Airport on June 7 in New York City, accompanied by her team and boyfriend Maxx Morando. She’s just released her new album Something Beautiful—and was in town all week to promote it. The album’s music film premiered at Tribeca Film Festival on June 6.
In a candid chat on the Every Single Album podcast, Miley shared that she was blocked from performing her Hannah Montana tunes after leaving Disney. “After I left Disney, I wasn’t allowed to perform any of the Hannah Montana music,”
That sentence carried weight—not because she wanted to revisit it at the time, she said, but because it felt odd.
“It’s not like I wanted to. I mean, performing ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ between ‘We Can’t Stop’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ wouldn’t have really made sense. But it was still sad knowing those songs have my voice, my face, and I wasn’t allowed to sing them.”
So, what’s changed?
Miley explained that after being inducted as a Disney Legend, she received permission to sing the songs again.
“But after being inducted as a Disney Legend, I was given permission to perform those songs in the future, which is pretty cool,”
She was inducted last August—and visibly moved, tearing up during her acceptance speech.
This marks a full-circle moment. Miley’s shedding the formal ties that once kept her from her early hits, and stepping into a new era where she can own her entire story. It’ll be interesting to see if she weaves a bit of Montana nostalgia into her upcoming performances—or if she’ll keep it strictly Something Beautiful.
