Earlier this month, Broadway actor Nick Cordero, who starred as Sonny in 2018’s A Bronx Tale The Musical, as Earl in Waitress in 2016, and in Bullets Over Broadway and Rock of Ages, was revealed to be fighting for his life against.
Amanda Kloots has been keeping fans updated on his condition, sharing details of his long, hard, and scary battle against COVID-19 and complications that have arisen.
Among the complications, Nick, who is in the ICU, suffered a clotting issue that caused blockage of blood flow to his leg that required emergency surgery at the time. However, the clotting issue persisted, and eventually, Amanda shared that the leg had to be amputated.
“We are on day 18 of Nick being sedated in the ICU. It is April 18. We got some difficult news yesterday,” Amanda wrote on Instagram Story. “Basically, we had issues with his right leg with clotting and getting blood down to his toes. And it just isn’t happening with surgery and everything.”
“So, they had him on blood thinners for the clotting and, unfortunately, the blood thinners were causing other issues — blood pressure and some internal bleeding in his intestines,” she explained. “So we took him off the blood thinners, but that again was going to cause some clotting in the right leg. So the right leg will be amputated today.”
After the surgery, she updated fans that her husband was “doing the best he possibly can” on another Instagram Story.
“He’s recovering well after surgery. The wound looks OK. He didn’t lose a lot of blood. His blood pressure is OK. His heart is OK. Even his internal bleeding has come down,” she said. “Everything seems to be calmed down, which is so great because this has been such a roller coaster.”
On Thursday (April 23), she revealed that they were “in a bit of a waiting game” for Nick to wake up after his leg amputation, sharing that Nick had an MRI earlier this week.
“The doctors said that there was nothing on the MRI that would show that he won’t wake up, which is amazing. We are so happy about that because that was a big worry for all of us,” Amanda shared. “However, he hasn’t woken up and it’s been 12 days out of sedation.”
“The doctors do think he should have woken up by now,” she added.
But she’s staying positive that Nick will eventually wake up, writing, “He’s on Nick time and when he wakes up, we’ll all be here to celebrate it.”
In the meantime, she shares that doctors are considering ways how to make him more comfortable – including slowly taking him off the ventilator and putting in a breathing tube.
“They’re slowly reducing his medication and the machines he’s on, so he’ll be off blood pressure medicine,” Amanda shared. “They are also trying to reduce the dialysis assistance, which is great.”
Amanda started a moving musical tribute for Nick, after playing one of their fave Elvis Presley songs, “Got A Lot Of Livin’ To Do,” over FaceTime appeared to have a positive impact on him. People have joined her in playing and dancing to his song, “Live Your Life,” as well as Elvis Presley’s song, “Got a Lot O’ Livin’ to Do,” to show their support for the young father.
Erin Silver, Aimee Song and Jacey Duprie also started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover Nick’s hospital bills and support his family – Amanda and their 10-month-old son, Elvis.
Get well soon, Nick!
