The 2025 Oscars nominations are in, and Emilia Pérez is leading the pack with a record-breaking 13 nods. This makes it the most-nominated non-English-language film in Academy history, surpassing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each had 10.
Hot on its heels are The Brutalist and Wicked, with 10 nominations each, followed by A Complete Unknown and Conclave, which both earned eight. All five films will compete for Best Picture alongside Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance.
Karla Sofía Gascón, the Spanish-born star of Emilia Pérez, has made history as the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for Best Actress. Director Jacques Audiard received double recognition for the film in the Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay categories, while Zoe Saldaña picked up a Supporting Actress nod.
Another standout moment? Coralie Fargeat, the only woman nominated for Best Director this year, earned recognition for The Substance, which also brought Demi Moore her first Oscar nomination and a Supporting Actress nod for Isabella Rossellini.
Meanwhile, Wicked soared with acting nominations for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, though director Jon M. Chu was notably absent from the directing category. Over in The Brutalist, Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce all landed acting noms, while Brady Corbet received recognition for both directing and co-writing with Mona Fastvold.
Fernanda Torres of I’m Still Here has matched her mother Fernanda Montenegro’s legendary nomination from 1999 (Central Station), becoming only the second Brazilian actress to vie for Best Actress. Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) also made waves, becoming the youngest two-time Best Actor nominee since James Dean, while Colman Domingo (Sing Sing) is the first Black actor to secure back-to-back Best Actor nominations since Denzel Washington.
Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, and Ralph Fiennes are also among this year’s star-studded acting nominees. Strong will face off against former Succession co-star Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), making for an exciting category showdown.
The nominations, initially set for Jan. 17, were delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, which destroyed over 14,000 structures. During the crisis, the Academy extended voting twice and pledged $1 million to wildfire relief efforts, cancelling the annual nominees’ luncheon to redirect funds.
